Dante, first and foremost, is an asshole. There's really no way to get around that, and no way to sugarcoat it with his good looks. The only things he puts any kind of respect into is his mother's memory, his craft, and possibly quite grudgingly, his brother. Everything else is outside that fringe, and he gives it little to no consideration. He's not cuddly, and he's not cute, and he'll prove that, the moment he opens his mouth.
However, there will always be a side to Dante that few, if anyone, will ever see. He idolized his mother as a child, and now he works to avenge her death, whether or not he's aware of it yet, with each demon he kills. It draws him closer and closer to his 'jackpot', as he would say. It's partially his drive toward that that makes him so fangy with other people, and partially because he's rude, uncouth, and completely socially unacceptable, not caring two whits what anyone might think of him or his attitude. As far as he's concerned, they can put up or shut up, because he doesn't have time for whiners.
He does have a soft side, buried deep, deep underneath the bluster and cockiness, but that's reserved for family. And considering he doesn't think any of his family is present, there's little to no chance of anyone ever seeing it, though if someone comes along with a tidbit of information he might be interested in, or a job that catches his attention, he'll at least attempt to be civil. Whether or not he even decides to take payment for his work. More often than not, if it involves his own personal motives, he'll do the work for free, just because it got him that much closer.
As a final note, Dante doesn't get emotionally involved with anyone. He keeps himself detached for a reason, because everyone around him either dies or goes away, and considers himself a bit of a jinx. If he sleeps with a girl more than once, it's simply because she was a good lay, not because he actually cares about her. He tries to keep away from that kind of attachment, given his own personal stigma, and because he doesn't want to run the same risk his father did. He can't understand how someone could do that, and then just abandon his children and wife to suffer as he, his brother, and his mother did, before his mother was killed and his brother was lost. |
